Trauma Counseling

Trauma

Many of us have endured challenges which have left us feeling isolated, confused and afraid. Often, these challenges can frame the way we look at ourselves and the world around us, causing us to feel activated or uncomfortable around certain people, places, or situations. Sometimes we even begin to think negatively about ourselves, hopeless or worried about the future.

We want you to know, you are not alone. The more we understand about trauma, the more we realize that so many of our issues relate back to these events that have shaped us. At Quiet River Counseling, we seek to create a safe space for you to share, keeping it natural and comfortable. We have clinicians trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing  (EMDR) and often find this approach very effective for breaking up the "stuck" memories and beliefs that continue to impact daily life. EMDR therapy allows you to develop new beliefs about yourself, accessing the strength that has always been there. The more I use EMDR, the more I am amazed by the empowerment and clarity it brings people. Feel free to watch the video above to learn more about trauma and about EMDR.

If you think you would like to learn more about EMDR or other treatment options for trauma, please contact us below. First, we will set up an initial assessment (office or telehealth) which typically takes about 60 minutes. Here we will discuss areas of concern that you are dealing with and see what therapeutic approach is best for you. Afterwards, we'll start scheduling sessions and you'll begin a new journey towards healing.

Stress and Anxiety

Stress and Anxiety

Stress and Anxiety are too often a part of everyday life. Stress can wreak havoc on our immune system, our digestive system, and basically every critical organ within our body. Not to mention the mental exhaustion and irritability that often follows. All of us experience stress and cope with stress in different ways. At Quiet River Counseling, we approach anxiety from a variety of perspectives and therapeutic modalities. There is no "one size fits all". We can offer a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction approach which teaches us to pay closer attention to the present moment, using  effective techniques to ground the mind and body. This may include meditation, breathing, gentle movements and journaling. We approach self care as a practice, which takes intention and time. We often use walk and talk therapy as a way to reduce overall stress, to calm the body and mind, while slowly walking and connecting with nature during session. The Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach helps us understand the situations triggering our stress response, and teaches us to challenge the thoughts, emotions and behaviors that follow. Through narrative therapy and EMDR approaches we can find the root causes that may be a source to the anxiety so you can truly heal and recover. Furthermore, additional coping strategies, self care and distress tolerance (DBT) may be helpful and will often be discussed and explored in session.

At Quiet River Counseling, we can offer you a place to reconnect with yourself and find peace. Whether interested in walk and talk therapy, telehealth or in person, we can navigate these challenges together. Please contact me below to schedule a free consultation. Afterwards, we will set up an initial assessment which typically takes about 60 minutes where you can share your concerns and unique experience, identifying a therapeutic approach right for you. Depression

Depression can be debilitating. At times, it can feel like feelings of sadness and worthlessness come out of nowhere, whereas for others it may follow a personal loss or struggle. Depression effects more than 300 million people worldwide (according to the WHO). Often, our sleep, focus, mood and motivation are effected, causing us to feel confused on how to approach day to day tasks. I often hear, "what's the point"?

At Quiet River Counseling, we encourage a whole body approach with depression. We consider our diet - what nutrients we are getting - physical activity to improve our mood and motivation, while using a variety of techniques to better understand and challenge the thoughts that swirl around our head causing our negativity and hopelessness. Developing strong support networks and social engagement is proven to help those with depression, and we work together to discover the support you need.

At Quiet River Counseling, we can offer you a place to share, find support, and discover your inner most self.  Whether interested in walk and talk therapy, telehealth or in person, we can navigate these challenges together. Please contact us below to schedule a free consultation. Afterwards, we will set up an initial assessment which typically takes about 60 minutes where you can share your concerns and unique experience, identifying a therapeutic approach right for you. Relationships can give our life so much meaning. When our relationship with our family, spouse, partner, or friend become strained, our day to day life can often feel confusing and challenging, not knowing how to approach certain issues or communicate effectively.

At Quiet River Counseling we work together with your family or partner to identify the issues within the relationship and empower you with the tools to resolve issues using a variety of therapeutic techniques. Often we work on our communication, our listening skills, and practice this together in sessions. We further look at the patterns in the relationship which have gotten you to this point and how to take ownership of your contribution to these patterns, identifying the roots causes and how to change them. At times, we may need to look at setting up boundaries, so that you can maintain your own sense of peace within the relationship, while developing a healthy and realistic perspective towards those you're in relationship with.

Whatever it is that you need to work on within your relationship, Quiet River Counseling can help. Whether interested in walk and talk therapy, telehealth or in person, we can navigate these challenges together. Afterwards, we will set up an initial assessment which typically takes about 60 minutes where you can share your concerns and unique experience, identifying a therapeutic approach right for you.
